Just now it occurred to me that in the chapel of San Damiano, St Francis was told by Our Lord "Francis, Go and rebuild my Church, which you can see has fallen into ruin." He began by physically rebuilding the church but then realised that the call was to rebuild the Church spiritually.
Obviously I am not the only one to think of this, but what a beautiful thought that perhaps Cardinal Bergoglio took the name Francis with this in mind.

Or is it Francis Xavier (he is a Jesuit!)?
Dear Fr,
How apt.
Deo Gratias.
Maybe, but possibly also the great Jesuit missionary evangelist St Francis Xavier.
Unless, as a Jesuit, he was thinking of Xavier.
It could just as well be for Francis Xavier, co-founder of the Jesuits. I don't see why it is automatically assumed that it after that proto-hippy, Francis. [Okay, so I hated Brother Son, Sister Moon. Dudes stripping in public squares. Give me strength,]
St Francis was not a proto-hippy. Brother Sun Sister Moon was an absurd distortion of his life. Read GK Chesterton's book on him to rid your mind of this awful parody of a great saint.
But yes, he might have been thinking of St Francis Xavier. Probably both; Pope Benedict explained that he was thinking of St Benedict and Benedict XV.
